Today we will compare some of the best weighted belts for running, walking and cardio exercise available on the market today. It is our mission to provide you with quality belts you can rely on to make your workout experience a success.

In this review, you will find our top choices and the key features for each brand and how they differ from one another in functionality, weight options, and fit.

If you are looking to add a new weighted waist belt to your exercise routine, whether it be for walking, running, jogging, or even swimming, then I invite you to take a look at our various brands and decide for yourself which is the perfect fit for you.

Weighted Belt vs Weightlifting Belt vs Dip Belt

First and foremost we need to clarify that these belts are not to be confused with weightlifting belts or dip belts for that matter.

Weightlifting belts are designed for lifting weights and are primarily used to give you that extra support and stability needed for your lower back when lifting heavy weights.

Dip belts on the other hand are designed for adding more weight, usually weight plates through a chain, to increase resistance when performing dips, or other exercises.

With that said, if you’r looking for weightlifting belts click here, or here for dip belts.

Otherwise, keep reading if you’re looking for the best weighted belts for running, walking, swim aerobics, scuba diving, and many other cardio exercises.

At the end of this article you will also find the many benefits weighted waist belts have to offer.

Top Benefits Of Using a Weighted Waist Belt

If you’re not sure whether these belts are right for you, then here are some top benefits that may help you decide.

Speed, Endurance, & Strength: Weighted belts are ideal for improving your speed, agility, and strength for everyday activities but even more so for athletic and sports-related activities. Here is a list of examples:

CrossFit

Football, Basketball, Soccer

Weight training

Aerobics

High School athletics

Training studios

Military, Police and Fire Department workout routines

Cardio & Weight Loss: You can turn any movement into a calorie-burning workout. The extra weight provides additional resistance which increases your heart rate. This is not only great for strengthening your heart but also helps burn more calories.

You can wear them anywhere, such as while doing chores around the house, running errands, or while performing various exercises. Here is a list of exercises you could use them for:

Walking

Jogging

Hiking

Pull-ups

Dips

Core training

CrossFit

Plyometrics

Aerobic exercises

Water Aerobics

Sports training

And many other fitness & sports-related activities

Performance & Physical Therapy: Increase your jump playing basketball by wearing a weighted belt during practice. Or if you’re recovering from a sports injury, they are also great for rehabilitation and gaining back your strength.

Freedom of Movement: Unlike the weighted vest, these belts provide for complete upper-body freedom of movement for exercises such as walking, running, aerobics, CrossFit, plyometrics, and various other exercises.

Which Weighted Belt Is Right For Me?

Best Weighted Belt

Activities

VersaFit
W8FIT
Power Stride

Best weighted belt for running, walking, jogging, and hiking.

VersaFit
Mir

Best for strength and endurance training.

All Pro Aquatic Water Walker

Best weighted belt for water aerobics and scuba diving.

Summing Things Up

Wearing a weighted waist belt for running, walking, hiking, and many other fitness-related activities is like carrying extra weight without the burden of holding it or limiting your upper body movements.

Weight adjustability gives you more flexibility to control how much weight you need for any given exercise. Lighter weights are ideal for walking, running, hiking, and rehab work. While on the other hand, heavier weights are great for increasing strength and performance in various fitness-related activities.

Your typical barbell found in most gyms is the Olympic barbell which weighs 44lbs or roughly 20kg. However, there are various other types of barbells other than just your straight barbell. We will compare them and how much those barbells weigh as well.

I can’t tell you how many countless times I’ve heard the question… ”how much do barbells weigh?” I have been on the receiving end of that question many times, but have also posed the question myself considering there are now so many different types of barbells.

You may catch me on occasion grabbing a barbell and running over to the weight scale to verify the weight of a particular barbell. After all, it is important to me that I know exactly how much weight I’m using. It baffles me that these companies still have not taken the extra effort to just stamp the total weight on these bars to make life easier on us.

Well, since that day will more than likely never come, I decided to do a little research and put together this short yet informative article to help everyone find the different weights of barbells by barbell type.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

It’s Time To Compare Weight By Barbell Type

How Much Does Your Typical Barbell At The Gym Weigh?

How Much Do Barbells Weigh by Length?

Standard Barbell vs Olympic Barbell (Size & Weight Clarification)

More Weights Of Barbells You Will Find At The Gym

Quick Reference Table Of How Much Barbells Weigh By Type

Who Still Uses Standard Barbells & Why?

Lighter Weight Barbells for Women

Closing Remarks

It’s Time To Compare Weight By Barbell Type

Back in the day when I first started weight training at the gym, when you went to load up a bar for the bench press you couldn’t just slap on a 45lb plate as you do now. Unless of course, you wanted to have the entire bar flip on you. And yes that has happened to me and was quite embarrassing, to say the least.

Find some of the best collapsible weight benches for your home gym here.

Luckily you won’t find those barbells in gyms anymore. Back then they were still using the lighter barbells. Now you will find that every gym uses the Olympic sized 44lb barbell. These are heavy enough to counterbalance any 45lb plate and thus no worries about bars flipping.

But with the times have come newer types and newer versions of bars. Each with its own unique function, size, shape…and yes, weight. And that’s where I come in.

So without further ado, here is my list of bars and how much each barbell weighs.

How Much Does Your Typical Barbell At The Gym Weigh?

Obviously the first bar everyone is interested in is the Olympic barbell found in your local gyms. These barbells are used for benching, squat exercises, shoulder press, and so on.

Olympic barbells weigh 44lbs and are typically 7 feet in length. These bars fit Olympic size plates, where the center hole is 2” in diameter and are strong enough to load up each side with several 45lb plates. The maximum weight load for these may vary, but on average the max load capacity is anywhere from 1000 to 1500lbs.

How Much Do Barbells Weigh by Length?

Even though the 7” barbell is the most common barbell found in the gym, there are still other lengths. You have for example the 6” barbell and the 5” barbell which are also popular for upper body resistance training and many CrossFit exercise routines.

The following is an illustration of the 3 most commonly used barbells and shows how much each barbell weighs by length.

Standard Barbell vs Olympic Barbell (Size & Weight Clarification)

I’ve been reading various sources that reference the standard barbell with the incorrect weight and size. I believe this is due to the term “standard” being used in a confusing way, which then becomes misleading and causes misinformation.

So I would like to at least clarify this before moving on.

You see, in most cases, the term “standard” is being used as a definition of being used or accepted as normal or average. When in fact the term standard, in this case, refers to the size of the barbell’s bar size.

So to clarify this, the “Standard Barbell” uses “standard weight plates”. These weight plates have a center hole that measures 1” in diameter as opposed to the Olympic sized weight plates which are 2” in diameter.

That said, the standard barbell’s smaller sized loading sleeves also make this barbell lighter in weight than the Olympic barbells.

Here are your typical barbell weights:

More Weights Of Barbells You Will Find At The Gym

Now I could go on like this for each and every bar, but decided not to bore you too much with all this reading and going on and on. So I decided to make things easier for you and created a quick reference table for you. In this way, you can quickly and easily find the weight of any barbell you may be interested in.

The following table will provide you with a quick comparison of various types of barbells and how much each barbell weighs, including some dimensions. Following this table, I will then give you a description of what some of these barbells are used for. Just in case you were wondering.

Who Still Uses Standard Barbells & Why?

Unless you’re using a gym from the ’80s that has never been upgraded to modern equipment standards, all commercial gyms will now only use barbells with Olympic sized loadable sleeves.

Every gym carries Olympic sized weight plates which usually range from 2.5lbs up to 45lbs plates. As mentioned before, these Olympic weight plates have a 2” in diameter center hole that will snuggly glide over the 2” Olympic sized loadable sleeve on the Olympic Barbell bar.

The standard barbell, on the other hand, will only fit 1” weight plates.

So what’s important to note here is that you can not fit a 1” plate on the Olympic barbell.

As I already mentioned, you will never find the standard plates in any of your modern gyms. Nonetheless, the standard barbells are still being sold as are the standard weight plates.

Why are these plates still being used, you might ask?

Well, these standard-sized weight plates have been sold for decades to fit the standard 1” sized dumbbell bars found in most homes across the country. And since weights are not exactly cheap, it would be more practical to buy a standard barbell which fits your already existing standard weight plates.

So the point I’m trying to make is, if you’re in the market for a new barbell and weights for your home gym, make sure you pay close attention to the barbell weight sleeve size.

Always make sure to match your weights with the barbell loadable sleeve.

You can always convert a standard barbell to fit Olympic sized weights with an Olympic adaptor sleeve. But you can not convert an Olympic Barbell to fit standard weight plates.

Lighter Weight Barbells for Women

With so many active female fitness enthusiasts and athletes, and the growing popularity of CrossFit it only makes sense that there be a barbell that is more functional for females.

Performing exercises such as the snatch, clean & jerk, bench press, squats, and deadlifts with a 45 lb barbell are not always ideal for female athletes.

However, using a 33 lb barbell for women can have many benefits such as added flexibility, more workout options, and increased control for better form and improved workouts.

Not all gyms have these barbells, however, if you are looking to add a barbell to your home gym setup, I would strongly suggest the 33lb barbell.

Closing Remarks

Knowing how much a barbell weighs may seem trivial to some, but for the avid bodybuilder, athlete, or CrossFit enthusiast, these numbers mean everything.

I hope this article was helpful and answered any questions you had about how much a certain barbell weighs and maybe even learned a little something extra along the way.

Good luck in all your fitness endeavors, and stay healthy.

Today, let’s examine the differences and compare the advantages of the soft kettlebell vs hardstyle kettlebells in order to get a better understanding of how each can benefit you the most.

Kettlebell training offers a different approach to weight training that can be more fun than traditional slower methods. For anyone new to kettlebell training, it’s one of the best types of exercise to increase your heart rate for a sound cardio workout. It offers several advantages including dynamic fast lifts which can be more fun than the slow controlled weight training. Kettlebells are easy to grip and they help build cardio endurance, agility, balance, and strength.

Once you’ve mastered a few of the basic moves and start reaping the fitness benefits you’ll inevitably begin to look for the best techniques and types of kettlebells. While it’s a matter of personal choice, there are differences in the two kettlebell styles, the equipment and the outcomes in your fitness training.

While there are soft style and hardstyle exercise routines for kettlebell workouts there are also soft and hardstyle types of kettlebells. The best choice depends on your preferences and individual needs along with other factors.

What are Soft Kettlebells?

Soft kettlebells are constructed with a soft outer covering that helps to protect the user from injury during a workout. Most are filled with some type of filler such as sand or water. They’re made in a range of different weights, and models. Each manufacturer offers their version of the soft kettlebell, but the best will feature high quality and durable materials that resist wear and tear under heavy use.

When shopping around, it’s wise to make sure that this kettlebell style is made with strong and durable materials and reinforced stitching. Also, choose a model that features a large handle that is comfortable to hold and offers a good grip to reduce the chance of injury from equipment failure.

Soft Kettlebell vs Hardstyle Kettlebell

We’ve learned what Soft kettlebells are, but how do they stack up to hardstyle kettlebells? Hardstyle kettlebells are made of cast iron or steel materials, in most cases. They are sometimes made of hard plastic or covered in rubberized material. You’ll notice the difference between the two when you compare them side by side.

You can buy hardstyle kettlebells with adjustable weights, but most traditional kettlebells are one solid weight.

Thus making them difficult to carry if you plan on lugging your hardstyle kettlebell to the gym and back. These are only a few of the considerations to be aware of when choosing between the two.

We will look at more later.

There are pros and cons to any type of exercise equipment. When deciding which type is best for you, it’s a good idea to weigh the benefits against the drawbacks.

Lifestyle is also something to think about. Where you live and the type of flooring you have in your home will matters.

Advantages of Softstyle Kettlebells

Softstyle kettlebells have a few advantages over the hardstyle type. The advantages include:

-Safer to use

Hardstyle Kettlebells are more dangerous when you’re swinging them around because they have no padding. If you make an impact on a part of your body, you’re likely to get a nasty bruise or worse. Softstyle is padded and less likely to cause injury. They’re also safer if you have children in the house thanks to the padding.

-Quiet on floors

The padding on softstyle kettlebells muffles the sound when the bells are placed on the floor. The hardstyle is louder and may disturb people in other rooms of the house.

If you live in an apartment or duplex with neighbors nearby, the sound is less likely to be heard by the people next door.

-Will not damage floors or carpet

There is always the risk of damaging wood or tile floors with hardstyle kettlebells. The hard materials could cause breakage of tile floors or scratches, grooves or dents if dropped on wood floors. The soft exterior provides several benefits over kettlebells without this protection.

-Will not rust

Soft kettlebells are made of materials that are resistant to rust and corrosion. Most come with waterproof liners on the inside of the bag. This prevents the fillers from leaking.

Hardstyle Kettlebells made of cast iron may rust when exposed to moisture such as sweat or humidity.

-More portable and convenient

Softstyle kettlebells may be emptied of their contents for more convenient carrying and storage.

-Better adjustability

You can fill the soft-style kettlebells with the desired amount of sand or water to achieve a range of weights. This means that just one soft style kettlebell can take the place of a dozen Hardstyle types. It takes up less room in your home and it’s less expensive to have a range of weights at your disposal.

Advantages of Hardstyle Kettlebells

-Heavier weight options

The better hardstyle kettlebells are made from one solid piece of metal. They provide heavier weight options than Softstyle. After you’ve been working out with kettlebells for a while, you’ll be ready for a heavier weight. In fact, it will be necessary to continue to present a challenge for building endurance and strength.

-Less bulky

Hardstyle Kettlebells come in a variety of shapes and sizes. In general, most are less bulky than the sand or water-filled versions.

-More stable

Hardstyle Kettlebells are one solid piece of metal. This means that they are stable. Softstyle bells are filled with materials that have a tendency to move and shift. The weight is not always evenly distributed and this can throw you off when you’re working out, creating an imbalance and potential injuries such as a pulled muscle, tendon or other damage to soft tissue from the strain.

6 Soft Kettlebell Styles I Have Reviewed

There are a few different types of soft kettlebells available. These include sand-filled and water-filled. We pulled a few examples to show you the differences from one brand to another.

Sand-filled Soft Kettlebells

JMJ Products version of the sand-filled soft kettlebell has a handle that is like a suitcase, complete with grips and a soft covering. This kettlebell is completely adjustable because the bag can be filled with either wet or dry sand, pebbles, rocks, dirt, chains, buckshot or other materials.

You can fill the bag with the desired weight up to 35 pounds to customize your workout, and the inside of the bag is lined to keep the outside free of dust or leakage from the materials inside.

If you enjoy working out barefoot or in your socks, or just enjoy the thought of dropping your weight on the floor with little noise and without damaging your floor or carpet, then this is the perfect soft padded kettlebell for you.

These kettlebells do not require sand or pellets to be added as filler. They come pre-filled and ready to use straight out of the box.

When is a Soft Kettlebell Better to Use Than a Hardstyle?

-Use in apartment or home

The soft kettlebell is usually a better choice when you live in an apartment with neighbors or in a home with other people. The reason for this is because of the noise that the hardstyle cause when they come in contact with the floor. If a Hardstyle kettlebell slips out of your hand during an exercise, it is more likely to cause damage to ceilings, windows, walls or floors.

-Fewer injuries and safer to use around kids

The padding that covers the soft kettlebell adds a safety feature that lessens the damage of an impact. If a child picks up the kettlebell and drops it on their feet, there will be at least some protection thanks to the padding.

-Much more portable and easier to store

Soft kettlebells may be emptied of the filler which makes them more portable and lighter for carrying to the gym and back. This feature also saves space in storage when the equipment is not in use.

-More functional and versatile

You can use just one soft-style kettlebell to cover a range of weights that would require more cast-iron or steel kettlebells. If you use an adjustable softstyle, then you will be able to adjust the weight by the amount of filler that you use.

13 Best Adjustable Kettlebells & Kettlebell Handles Review

5 Best Kettlebell Wrist Guards Comparison Guide & Review

4 Best Water Filled Dumbbells for Travel [Hydro Weights] Review

8 Best Workout Sandbags for Training & Fitness Review

Terms of Service

Final Thoughts

The debate over soft-style kettlebells vs hardstyle is ongoing, but it’s not really a matter of one being any better than the other. They’re just very different and it’s really more a matter of which fits better into your lifestyle.

In most aspects, soft kettlebells are safer, quieter, and more convenient than hardstyle. You trade the stability of solid construction and heavier weight of the hardstyle, which is why some prefer to stick with this type, while others are in favor of the versatility of soft kettlebells.

What is a Bulgarian Workout Bag?

The Bulgarian workout bag, also known as the functional training bag, was originally created in 2005 to help wrestlers with strength and endurance. The creation of the bag is credited to Ivan Ivanov, a former world-class athlete, and wrestling trainer. The invention of the bag stemmed from the need for versatile training tools that were safe to use in the wrestling training room.

The Bulgarian workout bag has a half-moon shape and is usually filled with sand. Most are constructed of leather, synthetic leather, or canvas. The feature that differentiates the Bulgarian bag from the traditional sandbag is the unique shape which allows for a wide range of motion to target many of the body’s muscle groups.

Although the bag was developed with wrestlers in mind, it has actually gained popularity with those who train in other sports. MMA fighters and athletes in other disciplines have used these bags for use as a way to enhance their workout.

What is a Workout Sandbag?

Sandbags are similar to the Bulgarian workout bag in some ways, but the methods of use and the end results from these two pieces of equipment can vary greatly.

A sandbag has a different shape and creates a different range of motion when used. Sandbags are designed to change their shape as they move which can target many different muscle groups during use. They have no consistent form which makes them challenging to use.

Sandbags are often used for CrossFit training. The problem that many people have with using sandbags is that they are very difficult to control due to the shifting of the sand inside. This lack of control is can be frustrating which is why many athletes and trainers prefer the Bulgarian bag to traditional sandbags.

There are however others who welcome this uneven weight distribution as it helps to strengthen stabilizer muscles and improve balance. Which for some athletes can be an important part of their workout routine.

With its unique design, you can more easily build strength and gain muscle in your forearms while also increasing your hand grip strength.

For those who have trained with sandbags in the past, understand that your grip on the Bulgarian bag will be somewhat different and will require much more control as it typically envolves much faster movements.

There are also exercises, many of which force a high core response, that can only be done with this type of bag. These exercises work out several muscle groups at once and will greatly increase your workout efficiency. So when you have limited time to work out, this bag makes it easier to hit various muscle groups simultaneously.

The following video shows a few different commonly performed Bulgarian bag exercises:

Why Should You Be Using a Bulgarian Workout Bag?

Nearly anyone can benefit from using a Bulgarian workout bag. It’s an excellent option if you’re looking for ways to improve your endurance and strength. These bags are quite affordable when compared to other workout equipment and they don’t require a lot of space for use or for storage. They come in several different weight options with 18 pounds, 26 pounds, and 37 pounds being some of the most common sizes available.

While gaining strength is not the main focus of using the functional training bag, hence the lower weights of the bags, you can build muscle in areas of your body that may be lacking with the use of other types of equipment. The main challenge that comes with using the bag is learning the techniques.

Functional Training

The Bulgarian workout bag is a great tool to increase your flexibility. The use of the bag teaches you to balance your body in new ways, especially when doing spin-style exercises. If you’re experienced in working with kettlebells, you can get a similar feeling to those swing exercises but with a more dynamic movement.

The use of the Bulgarian bag helps you learn control and allows for full-body movement. This dynamic movement makes you use those often neglected core muscles, which means better balance and stability during exercise and everyday activities.

Core Strength

Working out with the Bulgarian bag requires you to keep your body stabilized and gives you the motivation to keep your core muscles engaged during the workout. A strong core is the goal of many fitness enthusiasts and when you can train those extremely important core muscles at the same time you do other muscle groups, you’re able to better utilize your workout time.

One of the great things about using the bag is that you’ll know immediately when your form is off. This helps prevent ineffective workouts and also reduces injuries related to poor form.

The Bulgarian workout bag is travel-friendly and perfect for those who like to get in a good workout on vacation. You can use the bag indoors and outdoors, depending on the way you prefer to train.

These bags are also extremely durable and can stand up to heavy-duty usage. They last for many years which makes them a good investment if you’re looking for workout gear on a budget.

The flexible handles on the Bulgarian bag give you the option to target specific muscle groups and provide an efficient way to increase your grip strength

What Type of Exercises Can You Do With The Bulgarian Workout Bag?

One of the best things about these training bags is that you can easily incorporate it into your regular workout routine. Most of the exercises that use the bag are simple in design and easy to do correctly, even for those who aren’t experienced in the gym.

Learning proper bag control is the challenge with the Bulgarian bag. There are plenty of online videos that can show you specific moves and techniques to help you get the most from your workout using these functional training bags. Athletes and exercise gurus of all types have found nearly endless ways to use the Bulgarian workout bag.

5 Popular Bulgarian Bag Exercises

The following exercises can be done as a warm-up or can be used for a full cardio workout using circuit training. If you’re new to using the bag, you can start slowly with 20-25 second circuits and buildup to longer circuits as your grip increases and your muscles gain strength and awareness of the movements.

Some popular Bulgarian bag exercises include:

halo

rotational swing

lateral swing

swing to squat

lateral lunge

Halo: The halo is a popular exercise that involves holding the bag above your head and swinging it one rotation. Ideally, you switch directions with each rotation which helps open up the shoulders. This exercise also helps create a stronger core and makes you conscious of keeping your spine in proper alignment to prevent injury.

Rotational Swing: In this Bulgarian bag exercise, grab the bag in front of your body and swing it in a circle, while dropping your knees during the lowest point. To get the most from this particular move, you should change directions every 15-20 seconds. This movement works the shoulders and helps you keep your obliques engaged. Twisting your torso during the swing helps you keep momentum and keep those core muscles active.

Lateral Swing: Like the previously mentioned rotational swing, the lateral swing also works the shoulder and oblique muscle groups. With the lateral swing, you place the bag around your neck with the weight behind your head. The movement involves stepping to one side, then the other side, while slightly shifting the bag with you to each side. This move works best when you focus on keeping your torso in the upright position as you push your hips into a slight squat.

Swing to Squat: The swing to squat move works just like it sounds. You begin by swinging the bag between your legs as you dip down slightly, then swing it up over your head and onto your shoulders. Once the bag is resting on your shoulders, lower into a squat position, then remove the bag from your shoulders, and repeat the sequence. This exercise works the hamstrings, glutes, and your core muscles. It works well for those who struggle with getting into a deep squat position doing other moves.

Lateral Lunges: Our last Bulgarian bag exercise is the lateral lunge, which is great for building strength in your quads and glutes. This move involves putting the bag over one shoulder while holding it securely with both hands. Take a wide step to the side and lower the bag until you feel a pull in the groin muscles. Return to the starting position and repeat the sequence. Not only does this move help you with posture and spine alignment during exercising, but it also helps work your glutes and gives you more mobility in your hips.

Bulgarian workout bags can also be useful to add extra weight to body-weight exercises. Finding ways to use the bag when you do push-ups, traditional squats, lunges, and more, can add more resistance to strengthen your muscles and increase your endurance. Using one of these bags during your regular workout routine allows you to vary your movements to work different muscles and prevent boredom.

Closing Remarks

If you’re looking for effective and efficient workout gear, the functional training bag may be perfect for you. These bags can be used by nearly anyone to help gain strength, endurance, and build lean muscle. They are similar to traditional workout sandbags in some ways, but can actually be easier to use, and better for overall body conditioning.

The shape of these functional training bags is what sets it apart from other sand-filled bags. This half-moon shape allows for a wide range of motion to work those muscle groups that often get neglected during other types of exercise. Plus, when you consider the price of the Bulgarian workout bag, and the convenience of being able to use it anywhere, you can see how great an investment it can be for anyone looking for a new and innovative way to get fit.

This review will compare some of the best water filled dumbbells you can find online that are not only affordable but also very practical and super easy to take along in a small bag just about anywhere.

Dumbbells are one of the most used and most effective and versatile workout devices you will ever find in any gym or home. They take up very little space and can be used anywhere for a full body workout.

Bodybuilders use them to pack on muscle. Athletes use them to build strength. And fitness enthusiasts like you and me use them to stay fit and tone our muscles.

If you’re like me, you hate missing a workout. And if you travel a lot for business or planning a vacation, you obviously cannot be lugging around 10 or 20-pound dumbbells.

Well, the solution to this problem, obviously, would be our water filled dumbbells. That said, let’s take a closer look at why that is, and what options you have available.

Water Filled Dumbbells vs Conventional Dumbbells

If exercising is important to you and you absolutely can not miss a workout, even when traveling for business or vacation, then water filled dumbbells could be the solution to your problem.

Let’s check out the many advantages the water filled dumbbells have over the conventional dumbbells when it comes to portability and travel and see if they may be the right fit or you.

Compact and Portable Weights

For the busy traveler or vacationer who does not have access to a gym, the water fillable dumbbells are very easy to pack and carry. The dumbbell balls when empty can be flattened and weigh close to nothing and the handles are also very lightweight and take up very little space.

Super Lightweight for Travel

The water fillable dumbbell balls are made of very light yet durable ABS plastic which weighs close to nothing. The handles and nuts that secure the weights in place are also made of lightweight plastic.

Adjustable Weights

Some of the models in this review have dumbbells that can hold more than one water filled dumbbell ball on each side of the handle. This gives you the added benefit of adjusting the weight up or down for your particular exercise routine.

Safe for User & Floors

Another great benefit is the soft dumbbell balls. Dropping one of these dumbbells on the floor will not damage wood or tile, nor will it injure your foot should it happen to land there. Therefore very safe to use, even for kids.

Cost-Effective Weights

With all the benefits you get from a water fillable dumbbell, acquiring one of these dumbbells is well worth the investment. Most of the dumbbells in this review are in the $30 to $40 range for a pair of dumbbells. Essentially, no more than buying a pair of conventional dumbbells.

Our 4 Best Water Filled Dumbbells Reviewed

Overall, the advantages of water filled dumbbells far outway conventional dumbbells when it comes to portability, and thus are far more practical for travel purposes. Here is my top 4 list for best water filled dumbbells and my #1 Editor’s Choice and Runner Up.

#1 AquaBells Dumbbell Weights (8 – 16 lbs per handle)

The AquaBells are great to take along on a vacation, boat cruise, or business trips. Each dumbbell disc when filled weighs approximately 4lbs. Thus a total of 8 to 16 pounds per handle.

The handles are easy to grip with soft cushioned handles, but the water ball openings are rather small. So give yourself some time for the initial fill up. By that, we mean an average of about 1 to 2 minutes per container. Not a deal breaker in my opinion.

To make things slightly easier, AquaBells does include a water funnel to assist in the filling process. And depending on your water source, you could have one filled in less than 30 seconds. See the video demo below.

Additional handle extension rods give you the option of adjusting the weights by adding an additional 2 weights to each side of the handle and provides ample grip space. What does this mean?

Each ball weighs approximately 5lbs when filled, so you can adjust each handle to be from 10 to 20lbs, for a total of 40lbs maximum for both. Enough weight to make most workout routines a success.

What I appreciate about these dumbbells are the extension rods. No other water fillable dumbbell offers this unique option. Being able to remove or add the extensions makes it much more flexible and user-friendly. You can avoid having the extra bar sticking out on each end when doing exercises by removing the extensions when only using 2 dumbbells. This is especially convenient when doing exercises close to your sides.

The company has tested the durability of the balls by dropping the dumbbells from 1.5 meters (approx. 5 feet) without any damage.
Oileus does offer a longer handle than most models to provide for more handle space for gripping while exercising. I do however feel that the dumbbell balls are rather bulky, and it does take some patience when filling them up.

3 Tips on How to Fill Your Dumbbells Faster

Here are some tips and suggestions to help you fill your dumbbells with water more quickly.

Don’t make the water stream from your faucet match the whole size. Opening up the faucet more will generate more pressure and even if some of the water may pour outside the filling hole, it will still fill much faster.

Make sure the dumbbell ball is completely deflated and flat. Do not try to stretch the plastic apart or get air into the ball. This does not help with the filling process. To the contrary. Water will fill the ball faster without any air in the disc.

Here are some cheap yet effective devices you could utilize to dramatically increase how fast you can fill your dumbbells with water. The rubber connector you see below should easily slip over most faucet heads. The water jet nozzle which is screwed to the end of the connector will then fit directly over the dumbbell fill hole. With this method, you could have each dumbbell filled with water in only a matter of seconds.

Final Thoughts & Recommendations

Without question, the number one reason for considering a water filled dumbbell is for its portability. With the balls empty and deflated, and including the handles and nuts you are talking around 1 pound of weight that can be converted to over 40 lbs of weight.

I have found, however, that there is a slight issue with time when it comes to filling the water balls. Due to the small holes, you can only pour at a considerably slower pace. Which when filling more than 4 or even 8 dumbbell balls can take some time. On average, most of you can expect 1 to 2 minutes per ball. But if you follow my tips above, you can actually cut that time considerably.

Let’s take a closer look at how filling these dumbbells with water might look like and how to assemble them.

I chose the 1UP Water Filled Dumbbells as my #1 Pick and Editor’s Choice for two reasons. My first being the thick non-slip foam grips. Having these will provide you with a firmer and more comfortable grip than without.

My second reason is the included funnel which makes filling the dumbbell balls much easier and thus a bit faster. Trust me, anything that will make filling these less time consuming is a big plus.

Also, learn how to use ankle weights, and what important features to consider before buying.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

The 3 Different Types of Ankle Weights for Exercising

In this review, we have decided to add two categories of weights you can choose from. Consequently, this will offer you more options and flexibility in your decision-making process. That said, this would include the fixed ankle weights and the weight adjustable ankle weights.

We have also found many users asking about waterproof ankle/wrist weights, so we have included one of these as well.

1. Waterproof Ankle Weights

Please also understand that with these ankle weights, waterproof does not necessary mean they will not take on water or get wet. It does mean, however, that they are made for use in water, will easily dry, and will not rust or leak sand.

While doing my research online I saw many people asking where they could find waterproof ankle weights. So I decided to make it my mission to find them. Little did I know, finding these weights would not be easy.

I did however eventually come up with 3 waterproof ankle weights that I have added to this review. One is made by Gymenist which is a set of fixed weights that can be used as wrist and ankle weights for swimming.

My second and third choices are the All Pro Adjustable the Water Gear waterproof ankle weights. These are also great ankle weights for the pool, water rehab exercises, diving, aquatic exercises, and water aerobics.

Additionally, if you are interested in a pair of waterproof wrist weights, then you may want to check out the All Pro Weight Adjustable Aqua Power aquatic wrist weights. These weigh 2.5 lbs each and are adjustable in .625 lb increments.

2. Adjustable Ankle Weights

The adjustable ankle/wrist weight is different from the fixed weight in that you can adjust the weights by removing and adding weight to and from the wraps.

So, as in the example above, you could buy one adjustable ankle weight and simply remove, or add weights to create your 3lb, 2lb, and 1lb wraps.

We have various weight options when it comes to adjustable ankle weight. These would include increments of 1lb to 5lb, 3lb to 10, 1lb to 10lb, and even 1lb to 20lb wrap.

3. Fixed Ankle Weights

Fixed ankle weights as the term implies, have a fixed weight. These are size adjustable to fit various ankle and wrist sizes but are not weight adjustable.

In other words, the weights have been permanently sewn into the fabric so you cannot remove them in order to adjust the amount of weight in these wraps.

Therefore, if you wanted to exercise with a 3lb wrap, and then follow up by using a 2lb and a 1lb weight, you would need three different ankle wraps.

Product & Features List

The following is a quick navigation list showing the different types of ankle weight designs and the available weight options for each.

In this review, you will find some of the best ankle weights found online. We have listed various types of ankle weights and in multiple weight categories.

Most of these can also be used as wrist weights and can be used by both men and women alike. We do however have the Empower, which the company has specifically designed for women.

For water aerobics, we have also found the waterproof ankle weights made by Gymenist that you can check out.

I have grouped these ankle weights into 3 categories:

waterproof ankle weights

adjustable weights: 0.5lb to 5lbs, or 10lbs to 20lbs

fixed weights: these come in various weight options

The Gymenist is our top choice for waterproof ankle weights and although it is specifically designed for swimming, diving, and all kinds of water sports and exercises, it can also be used for non-aquatic activities such as walking and resistance training.

They offer 1lb, 2lb, 3lb, and 4lb weight options that are easily adjustable to fit almost all ankle and wrist sizes. These weight options are for each wrap (so for the 2lb wraps, you would get two 2lb weights, totaling 4lb for the pair).

Using the hook and loop strap makes it easy to fit perfectly around your ankles or wrists.

These waterproof ankle/wrist weights are made of a durable neoprene fabric that you can wash after removing the inside gel pocket.

Ankle weights are designed to help increase resistance when performing exercises. This added resistance can help strengthen muscles by increasing muscle activation and is also popular for those looking to burn more calories.

That said, let’s take a look at some of the more popular uses for ankle/wrist weights and the different ways they can benefit you.

Resistance Training for Legs & Glutes

Ankle weights are mostly used for lower body exercises to strengthen and tone the legs and glute muscles. The more popular ankle weight exercises you can perform on yoga mats include donkey kicks, fire hydrants, leg lifts, and side leg raises, to name a few.

Resistance Training for Arms & Shoulders

Most ankle weights can also be used as wrist wraps to perform various upper body exercises to strengthen arm and shoulder muscles. A few of the many great resistance exercises you can do include arm circles, arm curls, triceps extensions, shoulder side laterals, and boxing punches.

Ankle Weight Exercise for Abdominals

Using ankle weights for exercising your abs is an excellent way to strengthen and tighten up your core muscles. My personal favorite when it comes to using these weights is working out abs. Adding these weights to your abdominal exercise routine will give you a burn like no other. Some of my favorite exercises include bicycle kicks, high knees, and lying and seated leg raises.

Walking or Running

Ankle and wrist weights can be used for slow-paced, moderate, or brisk walking to help add resistance and thus increase cardiovascular intensity to help strengthen your heart and burn more calories.

Aerobics or Cardio Exercise with Ankle Weights

Adding ankle/wrist weights to your aerobic or cardio exercise routines is a great way to easily add cardio load and quickly increase the number of calories burned during a workout.

Physical Therapy

Ankle and wrist weights are often recommended and used by physical and occupational therapists, chiropractors, athletic coaches and trainers for rehabilitation after injuries, or even sports training exercises to improve balance.

Water Aerobics and Aquatic Exercise

Using waterproof ankle/wrist weights is a great way to perform low to zero impact exercises in water. These types of exercises are ideal for seniors with weaker muscles and aching joints. But also helpful for those performing rehabilitation exercises after an injury.

Top Benefits of Using Ankle Weights for Exercise

Research has shown that adding 1 to 3 pounds of weight using ankle or wrist weights while performing aerobic activities such as walking can increase your heart rate by up to 10 beats per minute and increase calories burned by as much as 15%.

Let’s take a closer look at some more benefits ankle and wrist weights have to offer.

Muscle Toning

Using ankle or wrist weights with any resistance training and aerobic exercise will challenge your muscles to work harder. Adding any type of resistance to your exercise routine will activate more muscle fibers while at the same time increase cardiovascular capacity. The end result being more toned muscles.

Burn More Calories

Increasing your heart rate with added resistance will increase how many calories you will burn at any given time. That said, adding ankle or wrist weights to your workout routine will effectively accomplish that and help increase calories burned by as much as 15%.

Strengthen Muscles

Adding resistance to any exercise challenges our muscles to work harder and get stronger over time. You can find weights from 1lb up to 20lbs. Thus, more than enough to stimulate muscle growth and strengthen the upper body, lower body, and core muscles.

Improved Cardiovascular Health

The added resistance that ankle and wrist weights provide easily help raise your heart rate while exercising. That said, twenty to thirty minutes of aerobic exercise will not only help strengthen your heart but also help improve stamina and cardio endurance.

Best Ankle Weights FAQ

The following is a list of some of the most often asked questions by customers. These questions are provided to help answer some concerns you may have regarding ankle and wrist weights.

Is using ankle/wrist weights safe for aerobic exercise?

Weights greater than 3 pounds is generally not recommended for aerobic activities as it can cause undue stress on the shoulder muscles and arm muscle and joints.

Will one size fits most fit my large ankles?

When the manufacturer lists there product as one size fits most it means that is will indeed fit most sized ankles. However, most does not mean all! If you have super small or rather large ankles, which is only a small percentage of users, I would suggest first reading through the reviews. You will almost always find someone who is sharing their experience on this subject.

Additionally, my other suggestion would be if you have very small ankles and it is nearly impossible to find a size that will snuggly fit around your ankle, use a small towel to wrap around your ankle first. On the other hand, if your ankles are larger than normal, you could roll up a small towel or washcloth to fill in the space that is not covered. This will prevent the Velcro straps from touching and rubbing against your skin and help create a better fit.

Is it safe to use ankle weights for running?

Ankle weights are ideal for resistance training and low impact exercises, but not necessarily for running. You can use light and snuggly fitting weights for low paced, moderate, or brisk walking.

However, due to the higher impact caused by running, wearing these weights can result in various injuries.

For running purposes, I would highly suggest using a weighted vest or weighted belt over ankle or wrist weights.

Can I wash my ankle weights?

Unfortunately, most wraps are not machine washable. Especially those that have non-removable sand-filled weights. A few of the weight removable ankle weights are machine or at least hand washable.

Therefore, my suggestion would be to read the product label or contact the manufacturer. I would personally never machine wash any ankle wrap and always handwash to be on the safe side.

Closing Remarks

In this review, we have listed some of the best ankle weights for exercise and rehabilitation purposes. You can use ankle weights for many different exercises. However, you can use most of these weights as wrist weights to provide you with an even larger array of workout possibilities.

There are many great benefits to using these weights that include muscle toning and strengthening, improving cardiovascular health, rehabilitation exercises, and burning extra calories to name a few.

These weights come in many different designs and weight categories and are safe to use with most resistance and cardio exercises when used properly.

Adjustable ankle weights provide for a more versatile workout experience by providing more weight options for a wider range of exercises and workout intensity levels.

We hope this review was helpful and wish you all the best and much success in your fitness journey.
